Postnatal and Perinatal Mental Health

Having a baby is such a life changing event and it’s more than natural to experience different emotions and reactions during and after your pregnancy. But you might find that you are experiencing a mental health problem if these emotions start to have an impact on your day-to-day life.

It’s very common for women to experience a mental health problem during pregnancy or in the year after giving birth, and it could be a new mental health problem or another episode of a problem you’ve had before. This is known as a perinatal mental health problem. Mental health problems that you experience specifically after birth are known as postnatal (or postpartum) mental health problems. 

Becoming a new parent can be overwhelming and as it can involve experiencing a range of emotions, it can be hard to talk about how you’re feeling due to the pressure to be happy and excited about your new baby or you might be worried that you’re a bad parent if you’re struggling and perhaps even fearful that if you speak about how you are feeling, your baby will be taken away. Although you may feel like this, it is important to ask for support if you need it, chances are you’ll find other mothers are feeling or have felt the same way.
